Masdar PV to Supply Modules for One of West-Africa’s Largest Solar Plants in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Total capacity of 6 MW to be built in Sierra Leone

Ichtershausen, January 21, 2014 – Masdar PV, the innovative manufacturer of thin-film photovoltaic products selected for the delivery of 6 MWp to Sierra Leone.

The Solar Park Freetown with a capacity of 6 MW is one of six projects which are selected from over 80 project application for the first funding cycle of the IRENA/ADFD project facility. The selected projects all share the promise of improving energy access, helping to address energy security and creating broad socio-economic impacts. Further, each project will inspire and enhance the development of renewable energy projects across the globe.

The Project proposal and implementation in Sierra Leone is carried out by an AED 2 Billion consortium coordinated by HE Mr. Bahige Annan – Consul General of Sierra Leone in Dubai, UAE and IRENA Focal Point, Mr Siray Timbo, Special Envoy of H.E. The President, the Minister of Energy of the Republic of Sierra Leone and Advanced Science and Innovation Company (ASIC) LLC, which also acts as overall Project Manager.

The solar park will produce sufficient energy to power approximately 3000 average type households in Sierra Leone with electricity. The overall performance complies with 8.5% of Sierra Leone’s total energy consumption and ensures access to a renewable, affordable and sustainable energy supply in the future. Sierra Leone has the goal to achieve 25% of the country's energy generation from renewable sources by 2015.
