FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION IS PRACTICED ON UNITED STATES SOIL!

May 17, 2014: Fairfax, VA. – Female Genital Mutilation, more commonly known as FGM has received the most attention in 2014 than in previous years.  Earlier this year, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation announced the release of the title, When the Games Froze, a book about female genital mutilation.  A few months later, the Washington Post ran a detailed article on FGM, which drew a great deal of attention.  Then on April 19^th, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation officially launched its title, When the Games Froze in Fairfax, Virginia to a packed ballroom.  The Keynote Speaker, Eva Flomo, shocked the room with her revelation that she is a survivor of FGM since the age of seven.  “Hearing and reading about the practice of FGM in America is viewed as something that happens to girls in a faraway land.  However when a live woman stands before a crowd of Americans and tells them that her mother and grandmother took her to have her genitals cut off at 7 years old, Americans become curious and concerned,” said Angela Peabody, author of When the Games Froze.

Now this week, Americans learn of the breaking news from the Guardian which revealed that many girls living in the United States have undergone female genital mutilation right here in America.  The report also wrote that more than 228,000 girls are at risk in the U.S.

Female genital mutilation is the intentional removal of the external parts of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons.  In most FGM societies, it is believed that unless a girl has had the procedure done, she is not a woman, and is not marriageable because she is unclean.  The phrase, “Preparing a girl for marriage” means something entirely different in the U.S, while in FGM societies it means performing female genital mutilation on her.  It is feared that FGM could be one of the reasons for the recent abduction of the Nigerian girls.
