The Executive Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations to Sierra Leone, Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen had a farewell meeting this morning (Wednesday 19th March) with President Ernest Bai Koroma to mark the end of his nearly-2 year term of office in the country.
President Koroma said that Sierra Leone's story from war to peace, and now the ongoing transformation of the country could not have materialized without the support of the United Nations. "We feel very proud that at this very precise moment of your departure as a country we are also contributing to peace in other parts of the continent," he stated and profusely thanked the UN Secretary General (UNSG) through the ERSG for the great contributions the UN has made to the ongoing peace and security Sierra Leone is enjoying at the moment.
He also thanked the UNSG for taking the time to visit the country early this month for the closure of UNIPSL, and assured the outgoing ERSG that government will continue to work with the UN in other areas of governance and development.
Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen said he had a very productive tenure and enjoyed the cooperation of everyone, including Paramount Chiefs, civil society, political parties and more importantly, the Government of Sierra Leone, adding that it was an opportunity for him to serve the people of Sierra Leone during the course of his mandate which will officially end on 31st March, 2014.
The outgoing UN ERSG has been praised by many Sierra Leoneans for his astute diplomacy and outstanding service during his tenure. He was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Samura M.W. Kamara, who also made the introductory remarks.
